The first outdoor café of its kind in Dubai, City Café is an ideal venue for a ladies get together, an opportunity for businessmen to break away from the busy office routine and a perfect setting for evening relaxation. A romantic ambience with baroque style furniture that blends perfectly with the natural atmosphere - trees, waterfalls, a fountain and soothing music for the love birds. |

| A
beautiful river setting here,
including al fresco dining is let down by mediocre food.
The riverside setting close to Richmond Bridge provides the perfect surroundings for this restaurant specialising in food from the American Mid-West. Being part of the chain started at Montana (q.v.) the opportunity seems golden. However test meals have failed to see the standards maintained - either in the food or service departments - the whole relying too much on gimmicks (such as fresh vegetable wall decorations). As in other restaurants in the group starters include the likes of Chesapeake Bay soft-shelled crab with vegetable escabeche and perhaps Caesar salad with seared squid - mains: char-grilled Iowa rib-eye; seafood cazuela or a chestnut and molasses crusted rump of lamb. On sunny days pressures on the staff build too much, dishes sometimes appearing in an unprofessional manner with one course of peppered fish having the accompanying black beans reduced to a gluey stodge - not normal Montana standards! Sticking to the less ambitious dishes and a warm summer evening can still make an al fresco evening here a pleasant experience. But beware as even with food of this calibre booking is absolutely essential! - Bristro 21 -Riverside, Nr Richmond Bridge,Richmond, Surrey, TW10 6UJ |

| Food in the style of the American Mid-West
in Highgate.Resembling a military building with it's stark khaki exterior, this northern
outpost of Montana (q.v.) is a short walk down the hill from Highgate Village.
The interior is relaxing, with white napery (covered with brown wrapping paper
at lunchtime) and subdued modern jazz. Indeed live jazz is performed in
the evening from Wednesday to Sunday. Like other members of the group the
aim seems to be a fun restaurant with chili overtones – rather than a
gourmet's delight. However, standards are much higher than usual Tex/Mex!
Dishes can seem over described – a starter offering of frittata of wild mushrooms with tomato and chili salsa, resembling over-cooked onion bhajis (the mushroom element barely discernible) – other starters might include goat's cheese and smoked sweet potato rice cake, venison quesadilla and corn blinis with chargrilled prawns – all these coming with interesting sounding salsas or salads. Main courses follow the same pattern, with the likes of blue-maize crusted salmon; chargrilled calf's liver or vegetarian mixed plate – called a mezcla – again, these come with various accompaniments such as sweet and white potato gratin, orange – cascabel jam. Various wraps are a tempting lunchtime addition – cumin and oregano roasted lamb, eggplant and basil aioli. Idaho - London Restaurant,13 North Hill, Highgate, London. |

Good, moderately-priced modern British cooking from Terry Laybourne’s mini chain. Situated in the Aykley Heads suburb of Durham City, Bistro 21 occupies the kitchen of a restored 17th-century hall. The restaurant is full of quaint nooks and crannies and the bar can be found in a vaulted stone-built cellar. The ambience is relaxed and friendly and this popular bistro is bustling even on weekdays, so it is worth making a reservation. Montana Restaurant, London |

An enjoyable vegetarian haven from the day-time bustle and night-time torpor of the city. This little, simply furnished gem situated at the heart of Whitecross Street Market is certainly a pleasing find for all those with an interest in imaginative and well-prepared food. On offer is Mediterranean style vegetarian and vegan dishes with a smattering of organic food, wine and beer which prove to be excellent value for money. Dakota Restaurant, London. |
