Qarnein Island (United Arab Emirates), first marine protected area in the Arabian Gulf:
The announcement of Protected Area status for Qarnein Island and its unique ecosystem makes it the first internationally recognized Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the Arabian Gulf. Under the personal supervision of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Chairman of Abu-Dhabi Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency (ERWDA), Qarnein is a fine example of integrated conservation, including natural marine and terrestrial ecosystems, through traditional Islamic principles of conservation and natural resource management. The declaration of the Qarnein MPA protects breeding habitats for endangered hawksbill and green turtles as well as many seabird colonies and will also help to promote creation of further MPAs and sustainable fisheries management in the ecoregion. WWF International recognizes this significant conservation initiative as a Gift to the Earth and highlights this establishment of the first marine protected area in the Arabian Gulf as an example to be replicated at a wider scale not only in the UAE, but also in other parts of the region. In the longer term, WWF is working to establish an ecologically-representative network of marine protected areas in the Arabian Sea Global 200 ecoregion - courtesy to WWF.

airline to lease two more Boeing aircrafts..
Dubai's Emirates airline said it had signed
a lease contract for two Boeing aircrafts as part
of its drive to expand and strengthen its
fleet.The airline, part of the Emirates air
transport group which is owned by the Dubai
government, said in a statement that it had signed
the 10-year lease contract with the Singapore
Aircraft Leasing Enterprise (SALE).Emirates
said that it expects to receive the two Boeing
777-300s by September 2002. It also said that the
contract with SALE included an option to lease
another two Boeings, which would be delivered in
2003.
