GJEPC
participates in Arab Jewellery & Watch Show '2001
Abu Dhabi, November 2001 - The beauty and glitter of exotic jewellery from India
will be displayed at Arab Jewellery & Watch Show '2001, at Abu Dhabi. The
exhibition serves as a gateway to the gems and jewellery markets in northern
Africa, Europe, India, Asia-Pacific and the GCC countries.
Organised by Emirates Exhibition Services, Arab Jewellery & Watch Show '2001
is the premiere exhibition in the region. Exhibitors in the Indian Pavilion,
which has been put together by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC),
sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, will be displaying
an impressive array of mass-produced, machine-made jewellery, as well as
handmade ethnic jewellery. Visitors at the fair can witness some of India's
finest designs and superior technological skills and capabilities.
Mr Sanjay Kothari, Chairman, the GJEPC, said, "India has a prominent
position in the cut and polished diamonds segment. Of the world market share,
India enjoys over 80% share in volume terms and 55% in terms of value, while, in
the jewellery segment, it constitutes only 2% of the world market share. It is
only a matter of presence at the right forums that will help Indian products
gain international attention.
"Middle East is a growing market for India. We share a special bond and the
relationship has strengthened over the years with the sharing of similar tastes
and ethnicity. India has the necessary talent, expertise and capabilities and
jewellery coming from India are world-class and suiting the tastes of Middle
East" he added.
One of the participants who will be displaying jewellery at this prestigious
exhibition feels, "Though plain gold jewellery of 21 & 22-carats have
very high sales, necklaces, chains, bangles and bracelets studded with diamonds
and gemstones are also very popular." He added, "There has been a
definite shift in the trend of jewellery - a tremendous European influence, both
with reference to design and label."
The West Asian market is, by and large, ethnic, and India has an in-built
strength to cater to this region. Almost all the gold jewellery sold in West
Asia is of a high caratage - the most popular being 18, 21, 22 and, more
recently, 24. West Asia is the second-largest destination for Indian jewellery
exports after the USA.
India annually processes 700 tons of gold, in addition to rough diamonds,
coloured gemstones and semi-precious stones, which have made India a major
processing centre and manufacturer of the finest jewellery. The Government of
India, recognizing the export potential of this sector, is paying critical
attention to its development. Gold jewellery exports have been identified as a
thrust segment and suitable policies are being continuously evolved to ensure a
30% annual growth.
The GJEPC, representing around 7,000 exporters of gems and jewellery from all
over India, has been making a concerted effort to act as a catalyst to promote
India's gems and jewellery exports to West Asia and also the other parts of the
Gulf. The Council also organizes a standalone exhibition in Kuwait and has a
presence in jewellery shows in the region.
